What is Labour Market Information?

Labour Market Information provides us with the knowledge to help make decisions about the complex ‘world of work’. This ranges from descriptions of different careers, their entry routes, promotional prospects, salaries paid, skills and qualifications needed, etc. Significantly for young people, LMI also uncovers future demand; what kinds of jobs will be in demand after leaving school and what kinds of skills will be needed. The types of jobs we do and industry’s we work in are evolving at quite a pace; some jobs of the future don’t yet exist! Therefore, exploring, discussing and understanding this topic with or young people in careers education, is very important.

Skillsometer

This online tool has been designed for those who are not sure what jobs or careers they may be interested in. Thinking about skills, interests and the ways these can link to jobs can be a helpful first step in identifying possible future jobs. Take the Skillsometer quiz today to help you on your careers journey! The tool requires you to reflect on a number statements and decide what you love, are not sure about, or dislike. The statements are presented within six established occupational categories (Artistic, Realistic, Investigative, Conventional, Enterprising, and Social), which are then ranked against jobs. Once you have completed the quiz you will be provided with a short list of job suggestions that are most likely to be suited to your particular skills and interests. Each job can be explored as a description and is presented together with information on pay and hours. For further information on the job, and to compare with other jobs, you can also then go on to use the Careerometer; see below.

Careerometer

Careerometer can be used to explore and compare key information about occupations, help you learn about different occupations and identify potential careers. It provides access to a selection of UK headline data relating to pay, weekly hours of work and future employment prospects for different occupations, as well as description of the occupation.

Simply type in the title of the job you are interested in and the widget provides a series of options from which you can select the most relevant to you. You can then look up another two occupations and compare. You can also select ‘display the UK average’ and compare the information with the occupation you have selected.
